What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Strong?
Bob Marley once said, “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”
Strength isn't always an indication of your ability to carry many things. Sometimes it is your ability to stand even once those things have fallen. As believers, we’re called to persevere through trials, relying on God's strength, not our own.
Why Perseverance Is a Spiritual Muscle
Perseverance isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. It’s a spiritual muscle that must be strengthened throughout our Christian walk.
My Faith and Fitness Journey: A Lesson in Not Giving Up
I’ve never liked quitting. I always wanted to be a finisher. But in moments of weakness, I gave in to discouragement—especially during my weight loss journey. I’d commit for a few months, then give up when results didn’t show. That became a cycle—starting, stopping, and starting again.
Eventually, I realized I didn’t just need discpline. I also needed perseverance.
Asking God for Strength to Persevere
One day, overwhelmed and frustrated, I asked God to help me lose weight His way. I didn’t just want to look better—I wanted a healthy body and lifestyle, and I was ready to go the distance.
Biblical Encouragement to Persevere Through Hard Times
The Bible doesn't sugarcoat life—it tells us we will have trouble. But it also teaches us how to stand firm when adversity hits. Since it's inevitable we must ask ourselves, what will we do when that time come? Will we quit and recoil or push through and get to the other side?
Believe it or not, just like a muscle perseverance has to be strengthened and it only does over time. As the weight of life increases that's how we grow. The Bible teaches us the necessity for us to not give up.
As we follow Christ, we are taught to finish well and continue to remain committed during times of difficulty, adversity and challenges. This isn't about just sticking out hard things, but not turning away from our faith.
Hebrews 12:1–3
We are reminded in the text to fix our eyes on Jesus and throw off what hinders us—whether that's sin, discouragement, or distraction.
Spiritual Hindrances Can Block Your Growth
In my fitness journey, I was gaining strength but was not yet seeing results because I wasn’t addressing my diet. That was a hindrance—and like the scripture says, it needed to be thrown off.
Jesus’ Endurance Gives Us Hope
We are also encouraged by the life of Jesus to know, He endured the cross and received a great reward in God therefore we can have hope that there is glory
(Honor, praise, splendor and the presence of God) on the other side of pain.
Romans 8:18
If the glory isn’t even worth comparing to our pain, then our struggle isn't in vain. The reward will outweigh the weight.
Romans 5:3-4
The process of perseverance builds something lasting in us. And gives us hopes for an expected end.
James 1:2–4
If perseverance leads to both glory and hope, we’re encouraged to be joyful in the process and let perseverance do its work. That means every trial has an end and a purpose. Perseverance is the pathway to wholeness and sufficiency.
2 Peter 1:5-6
Testing your faith produces perseverance—but perseverance is also something you add to your faith. Like earning a degree, faith grows through study, practice, community, and testing.
Galatians 6:9
Perseverance can feel exhausting, especially when the burden feels too heavy. But being tired doesn’t disqualify you—quitting does.
James 1:12
Your perseverance is not forgotten by God. He promises a reward for those who remain faithful under pressure.
💬Final Thoughts: Strengthen Your Perseverance Like a Muscle
Perseverance is more than endurance—it's spiritual stamina. It's what pushes us through when everything in us wants to quit. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
Strengthen this muscle, and you’ll find not just results, but rewards—in your body, your soul, and your walk with Christ.
